Documentary Family Photoshoot at Navarre Beach
THE KINGS
We’re currently in a transition with how we photograph family sessions and this photoshoot here is the perfect example of why. These photos are intimate; they tell a story and really showcase love and authenticity.
Being completely honest here, family sessions for the longest time were something I hated photographing. Why? It always felt so stiff and repetitive to me. Here everyone, look at the camera and smile! Family sessions should be more than walking along the ocean hand-in-hand smiling. They should be real and raw interactions frozen in time and they should really reflect your family. Let’s get into how we photographed this family shoot to really make sure we were accurately capturing the Kings.
To start things off, let’s get into how we prepared for this photoshoot. When the Kings first inquired with us, we told them how we really wanted to just go with the flow. We wanted to remain as hands off as possible, helping guide them here and there while honing in on their connection. Mainly we wanted them to just love on each other in their own way and capture that. They were 100% on board and loved the idea of their photos being authentic and accurate to how they are as a family. Some families are super touchy and lovey dovey whereas other families show their love by making jokes, running around, and laughing a lot. So in order to help get a sense of what this photoshoot would look like, we asked them some questions ahead of time. Lauren had mentioned that they are very hands-on and love playing with their little one. We followed Atlas wherever he went. We spun him around, threw him in the air, walked with him, and watched the birds fly down to grab a fish from the water. Kids tend to get overstimulated pretty quickly which is another reason why we love a more documentary approach. It helps allow them to do what they want rather than going pose to pose to pose. While he was a little hard to slow down at times, he didn’t fuss once which made the photoshoot much smoother.
At one point we saw this guy flying across the ocean and Atlas was beyond fascinated with it. We sat and watched for a good ten minutes before he flew down. Children have such wonder for the world around them and it’s so precious to watch! Atlas did get hungry at one point so we took a little snack break which was perfect because he came back very energized and ready to play some more. We drew fish in the sand and then pulled out Lauren’s sonogram because they just found out that they’re expecting another little one. We took some more posed photos during this section to make sure we got the shot and got Atlas smiling and looking.
We ended the photoshoot by watching the sun go down, taking in all the colors of the sky and enjoying the gentle breeze. This photoshoot was the perfect reminder of why we do what we do and why we love it so much. Getting to freeze little moments in time is such a sweet thing.
